Tragic Update: Body of Missing FGCU Student Recovered After 16 Hours
Lee County, Florida – Sorrow Grips the Community as the Search Comes to an End
Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno officially confirmed the heart-wrenching news on Thursday: the body of Graham McGrath, a 19-year-old Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) student, has been located after an arduous 16-hour search. The tragedy unfolded as Graham fell off a crowded boat into Lake Como.
Sheriff Marceno highlighted the challenging conditions that hampered the search efforts, emphasizing the low visibility in Lake Como, a body of water with depths reaching up to 50 feet. The lake’s murky waters posed significant difficulties in locating Graham McGrath’s body.
“We held onto hope and offered our prayers for his safe recovery,” shared Sheriff Marceno, his voice heavy with sorrow. “Regrettably, our hopes were not realized.”
While the circumstances leading to Graham’s fall remain under investigation, Sheriff Marceno acknowledged that foul play has not been ruled out. Detectives are actively engaging with the 13 other individuals who were on the boat, seeking to gather crucial information about the incident.
Lake Como, situated near the FGCU campus and shared property with the Miromar Lakes living community, has witnessed previous tragedies, including drownings. The collective efforts of Lee County Sheriff’s Office, FGCU’s police department, San Carlos Park Fire, Iona McGregor Fire District, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) were evident as they joined forces in the search.
To overcome the visibility challenges, advanced technology, such as a side scan sonar system, was employed by search teams. As the sunlit sky peeked through the partly cloudy backdrop of a Florida summer, dedicated searchers continued their efforts.
