Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani were never married, however, their relationship lasted over a decade.
They met in 2002 when Holmes was 18. Balwani on the other hand was 19 years older and very married to a Japanese artist, Keiko Fujimoto. According to Holmes, during her time at Stanford, she was raped and sought solace in Balwani afterward.
Balwani got divorced in 2002 and got together with Holmes a year after in 2013. They officially moved in together in 2005. Balwani joined Theranos officially in 2009 as its Chief Operating Officer (COO), though he had been advising Holmes behind the scenes way before that time. Their relationship was kept secret during their time running the company.

During her trial, Holmes made claims that Balwani was very controlling, and sexually abusive, and berated her.
According to her, he wanted to kill the person she was and make her into a new Elizabeth.
