A catastrophic head injury claimed the life of Harrisburg resident Angel Mercado-Ocasio, 19, on Tuesday evening at a hospital in Cumberland County.
At the 7th and Radnor baseball field in Harrisburg, a temporary dugout collapsed on top of him on Monday, sending him to the hospital.
One of Angel’s best friends, Alejandro Escudero, remarked that Angel “had the biggest heart.” He was a young child, so why did it have to be him?
In addition to playing baseball at Central Penn College, Mercado-Ocasio played second base for his recreation team.
On Wednesday, the college issued the following statement:
“The death of Angel has crushed our Central Penn College family. We are grieving the tragic loss of one of our own, a bright young athlete who senselessly lost his life while assisting others in enjoying the sport he loved so much, as friends who have now become family.
No words could ever capture our agony.
Yesterday, the entire baseball team bid goodbye to Angel and conveyed their love for their brother. Because Angel is no longer among us, but also because he was, we shall all undergo change.
